Disabled Children and Young People Service

This service offers a range of support, information and advice to help you. You can find information on what they provide here.

Disabled Facilities Grant

An Occupational Therapist’s assessment can give advice and information to help a child or young person remain as independent as possible. This could include advice about equipment and alterations to your home to help them and you as the carer manage more easily.

We may be able to help you if you:

  • normally live in Somerset
  • have difficulty managing everyday tasks because of a physical disability or illness, or
  • you are a carer

We will talk with parents and carers to understand what could help you and your child or young person. We may be able to give you advice and information on the phone. Sometimes, Occupational Therapist from the Children’s Sensory, Physical Occupational (SPOT) Team may need to come and see you and your child or young person to make sure we give you the best advice. This is called an assessment.

If your assessment shows that you need equipment, for example, a hoist and sling or minor works such as stair rails, we will provide them free of charge.

The assessment may recommend that major alterations are needed to your home, such as putting in a stair-lift or wet-floor shower. If this is the case we will make a referral on your behalf to the District Council to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Adaptations that can be considered for a Disabled Facilities Grant include:

  • Widening doors and installing ramps
  • Making the home safe
  • Improving access to rooms and facilities for example stairlifts or a downstairs bathroom
  • Providing a heating system suitable for your needs
  • Adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use

For more information or to make a referral phone Customer Contact on 0300 123 2224 and request an Occupational Therapy Assessment from the SPOT Team.

If you need further information regarding the Disabled Facilities Grant process you can contact Somerset independence Plus (SIP) by email SomIndplus@Sedgemoor.gov.uk or phone 01278 435453.

Grants for computers

You could be eligible for a free computer, or at least for a big discount, from one of the UK’s Government or charity schemes.

These schemes help low-income families, or people with disabilities, by offering computers at reduced cost, or grants large enough to cover all or part of the cost of the hardware. Find more information about free and discounted computers.
