Child Tax Credit (including Disability element)

Help if you have a disabled child

Child Tax Credit has been replaced by Universal Credit in Somerset and so is not open to new claimants, details below are for existing claimants.  These changes also mean that people may have to move over to Universal Credit if they need to claim for a new child.

Child tax credit is an income-related allowance for parents and carers of children or young people who are still in full-time education. You don’t need to be working to claim child tax credit. You get money for each child that qualifies and child tax credit won’t affect your child benefit.

You could get Child Tax Credit for each child you’re responsible for if they’re:

  • Under 16
  • Under 20 and in approved education or training

You can find out more about Child Tax Credit and help if you have a disabled child on the GOV.UK website.

You can also find information on the Paying for childcare page on the County Council website.
