What SEND professionals do

Joined-up local arrangements to help families

Team Around the School
There is a process that means that schools can regularly meet with family support services to discuss children and young people, so that there is effective collaboration to meet the needs of vulnerable groups, including Special Educational Needs and Disability. This is called Team Around the School.

Professionals pool their resources at a tier 2 (early help) level to provide a strong foundation and support based on what families need, that concentrates on solutions and helps them become more resilient, so that a child or young person is less likely to need complex or acute support in the future.

It also provides the infrastructure for agencies to continue to work together to improve outcomes for children, young people from 0 to 25 years and their families.

Multi Agency Identification and Support In Early Years – MAISEY
There are many services available to children from birth to five years with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in Somerset. MAISEY meetings bring together people from all the different early years services to look at how they might help your child.

At a MAISEY meeting the people there will

  • Identify children who may need more help and plan for this
  • Share information
  • Identify a link professional for the School Entry Plan and monitor transition into pre-school and school

Many children are discussed at MAISEY meetings, always with parental consent.

Because of the number of different children under discussion, it is not possible for parents to attend MAISEY meetings. Parents’ thoughts and concerns about their child are also discussed with them in a separate meeting. They can also raise issues through contacting a professional involved with supporting their child who will discuss this at the next MAISEY meeting in their area.

The MAISEY meeting dates for this academic year are:
