Virtual headteacher

Promoting the achievement and progress of looked after children

All local authorities in England and Wales must appoint one person to promote the achievement and progress of their looked after children.

This is known as the Virtual School Head. In Somerset this is Zoe Heywood. The role has responsibility for about 500 children across up to 260 schools in Somerset and schools outside Somerset where our Children Looked After are placed.

The Virtual School is made up of advisors and support workers. They work with schools, carers and social workers to make sure that good quality Personal Education Plans (PEPs) are in place and that Somerset’s looked after children are appropriately supported to enjoy and achieve in their education.
